BEN VIDA : SOFT SYSTEMS MUSIC
Edition of 50
Hand cut lathe recording on 7" lacquer with laser engraving.
Full color gatefold and broadside insert.
Soft Systems Music uses facial recognition software as a compositional tool to sonify the smile.
Vida then transforms the expressions of smiling actors into what he calls a "soft system”—a blend of the human and algorithmic, in which any subtle motion alters the composition.
This work debuted in his 2016 exhibition, [SMILE ON.] ... [PAUSE] ... [SMILE OFF.] and was later adapted to a live performance for E.S.P. TV's "Lifestyle Guru" event in 2017.

LoVid | Mycotechnology: The Work of Wires in the Age of Secondary Decomposition
May 1-30, 2025
Opening Reception | May 2, 5-8pm

VideoWear is LoVid’s seminal work from 2003 -- garb for a retro-futuristic universe where technology has developed as an extension of organic systems. 14 LCD screens, interconnected by hundreds of feet of wire, are embedded in protective sportswear and covered with sewn patchworks of video stills.
This wearable video sculpture was featured during LoVid’s performances and exhibitions, primarily from 2003-2008. Performing with VideoWear, LoVid become video marionettes. In their absence, all that remains is their avatars and puddles of video signal.
The only formal documentation of the original VideoWear existed as a series of analog photographs from 2004, taken before LoVid refurbished the garments in 2005. In 2022, they discovered that the original photo negatives were damaged/remixed by mold and water, so they scanned them in their modified form to create this new series of photographs. This work shows the fragility of physical materials and the enmeshment of technology with nature, finding beauty in error, chance, and obsolescence.
